Summer 2014 Book Study

This summer we will be doing a online/interactive book study.  The Book we will be looking at is Open by David Price.  By a very close vote we will use alternating Mondays and Wednesdays to get together and discuss the book and its implications on our schools and classrooms.  The first date of discussion will be Wednesday June 11th at 8 pm.  We have been in contact with the author and our excited at possibility of him joining our discussions.

Please have the first two chapters read for next Wednesday.  Happy reading.

  3. Sorry that I can't make the first session. So, thought I'd share a couple of background thoughts:

The Intro attempts to set the scene in a personal context. I've observed that we are learning socially, almost invisibly, so frequently is it happening. It's only when people start to log their 'learning moments' or, as in my case. when learning from others has life-changing consequences, that we really absorb its impact.

Chapter 1: This was originally much longer but I was trying to cram too many ideas in. If it feels like it's meandering, stay with it - the remaining chapters narrow the focus quite a bit!
I was trying to show that, although the economic and geo-political circumstances following the GFC were (and still are) pretty devastating (Greek youth unemployment is still >50%), I take great encouragement from the autonomous collectives that have sprung up. Perhaps the most significant long-term shift is what's sometimes called 'digital Taylorism': the way the labour is now organised by chopping up tasks and putting them out to auction. We're facing a free-lance future, so what are we doing to prepare our students for this new reality? (Please visit elance.com if you want to see the future now) What skills are they going to need, and is school quipping them with those skills?
I'll be flying home from Melbourne when you're talking but I look forward to reading the storify.
Thanks for your interest in my book!
